Vellore Church Roof Collapse: 3 Workers Killed, 11 Injured in Tamil Nadu

The Vellore Church Roof Collapse has resulted in three deaths and 11 injuries after the roof slab of an under-construction Church of South India (CSI) building collapsed near Katpadi in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, on Thursday, September 10. The incident occurred at Mandi Krishnapuram while workers were reportedly engaged in pouring concrete for the roof.

The sudden structural failure trapped several workers beneath concrete debris and rubble, prompting an immediate rescue operation involving police, fire and rescue personnel, district officials and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Vellore Church Roof Collapse Traps Workers at Construction Site

According to officials, the accident occurred when the supporting scaffolding and framework gave way while concrete work was underway.

More than a dozen workers were reportedly present at the site. The collapse brought down the concrete structure, trapping workers underneath the debris. Rescue teams worked to locate and evacuate those caught inside the collapsed section.

Initial reports varied as rescue operations were still underway, but later updates confirmed that the death toll had reached three, while 11 workers were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.

Three Workers Lose Their Lives

The three deceased included 39-year-old building contractor John from Bengaluru and two daily-wage workers, Immanuel and Samuel, both aged 45 and from Andhra Pradesh, according to reports.

Some of the injured workers were transported to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital and Christian Medical College Hospital, while others were taken to a hospital in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

The incident has raised concerns about structural safety and construction practices at the site, although authorities have not yet established the exact cause of the collapse.

NDRF Joins Rescue Operation

A team from the NDRF’s Arakkonam unit was deployed to assist the district administration, police and fire services.

The rescue operation involved specialised equipment to search through the concrete debris and ensure that no workers remained trapped. District Collector P.S. Leela Alex also visited the site and monitored the response.

Officials said the condition of at least eight injured workers was stable in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

Investigation Ordered Into Structural Failure

Authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the Vellore Church Roof Collapse.

The district administration is expected to examine the structural failure and determine whether required approvals and construction permits had been obtained. Police have also been instructed to investigate the circumstances that led to the collapse.

Preliminary reports indicated that the supporting scaffolding or framework may have failed, causing the concrete section to collapse. However, officials have stressed that the exact reason will only be known after a detailed investigation.

Construction Safety Under Scrutiny

The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of structural stability, proper scaffolding and safety procedures during major construction work.

Roof-concreting operations involve significant loads on temporary support structures. Any failure in scaffolding, formwork or structural support can result in a sudden collapse and put workers at serious risk.

Authorities will now have to determine whether the construction site complied with applicable safety standards and whether any negligence contributed to the accident.

Rescue Teams Work Against Time

The rescue operation began shortly after the collapse, with local residents, police and fire personnel initially helping to pull workers from the debris.

As the scale of the incident became clearer, specialised NDRF personnel were brought in to support the operation. Several injured workers were subsequently shifted to medical facilities for treatment.

The incident took place close to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border, resulting in coordination between authorities and hospitals on both sides of the region.

Families Await Answers

With three workers confirmed dead and several others injured, the accident has left families and colleagues waiting for answers about how the construction structure failed.

The investigation is expected to establish whether the collapse resulted from a problem with the temporary support system, construction methods, material quality, structural design or another factor.

Any responsibility will depend on the findings of the official inquiry.
