Busy Bengaluru professionals are rethinking pet ownership. Nearby Pets India on the rise of cats, birds and small pets in the city.
A ten-hour workday, a long commute on Outer Ring Road and a rented flat with a strict landlord do not leave much room for a large dog. Yet Bengaluru’s young professionals still want a pet to come home to. More and more, they are finding the answer in a cat, a pair of budgies or a hamster.
Nearby Pets India, an online pet platform that serves more than 770 cities, says Bengaluru stands out for interest in pets that suit busy working lives. Kittens, birds and small animals make up a growing share of enquiries from areas such as Whitefield, Koramangala, HSR Layout and Electronic City.
“Bengaluru buyers are very honest with themselves about their time,” says Soundarrajan Kannan, Founder & CEO of Nearby Pets India. “They tell us, ‘I work long hours and I travel.’ Our job is to match that life with a pet that will be happy in it, not to push the most expensive breed.”
Local sourcing, shorter journeys
Bengaluru is one of the cities where Nearby Pets India sources cats, birds and small animals locally, so pets bought in the city travel only a short distance. The company also runs a centre in Bengaluru and has a regional point of contact for customers across Karnataka and Kerala.
This matters most for small and delicate animals. A hamster or a young bird handles a short road trip far better than a long journey across the country. The company guarantees live arrival until the pet is handed over to its new owner.
“A hamster or a young bird should spend as little time in transit as possible,” says Mohit Johari, Operations Head at Nearby Pets India. “That is why we source small pets close to the buyer wherever we can.”
Matching pet to lifestyle
The company’s team suggests different pets for different routines:
Cats such as Persians and other indoor breeds for people who are out all day but home most evenings.
Budgies and lovebirds for those who enjoy a lively home and can give 20–30 minutes of attention a day.
Hamsters for first-time owners in small flats, as long as they can provide a proper cage. A home cage with a running wheel and water sipper is available from the company.
Dogs only when someone in the household can commit to daily walks and training.
Built for cautious buyers
Bengaluru’s online-first buyers compare carefully and are quick to spot a bad deal. Nearby Pets India’s meet-first model asks for a 25% advance to reserve a pet. The remaining 75% is paid only after the buyer meets the pet at delivery.
Every pet is vet-checked before dispatch and travels with a vet certificate. Puppies are at least 42 days old with their first vaccination and deworming done. All pets are covered by a 7-day health guarantee.
Buyers can browse and book on the Nearby Pets India website or Android app and pay by UPI, card or net banking.
“Bengaluru buyers want to see everything on screen before they commit,” says Mohd Asad Siddiqui, CTO of Nearby Pets India. “So the website and app show the full price, including delivery, before checkout. On the website, a buyer can even book without creating an account.”
“A pet should make a busy life better, not add guilt to it,” Kannan says. “The right match is everything.”
Founded in 2023, Nearby Pets India has served more than 1,000 customers across the country.
